You play as a public taxi driver or a private driver in the style of ride-hailing apps. Your job is to find passengers on the map, drive to their location, pick them up and drop them off at their destination.

The developers spent around four years reworking the game compared with the previous entry, and realism is clearly the priority. You fasten your seatbelt, switch the lights on and off and shift gears just like in a real car. Passengers react differently to how you drive: VIPs, people in a hurry, cautious riders and indecisive customers all behave in their own way.

Graphics are impressive for the file size, backed by updated engine sounds and detailed ambient effects. Don’t expect body deformation in heavy crashes, though, as the studio left it out to keep performance smooth. You can still collide with plenty of objects on and beside the road, which keeps the world feeling lively.

Game modes, cars and cities

The game has three main modes:

• Career: complete missions and levels to earn money.
• Free Roam: drive freely and explore with no objectives.
• Multiplayer: play online with friends.

Money from jobs lets you buy better vehicles from a lineup of more than 30 cars, including standard models, SUVs, luxury cars, sports cars and supercars. You can customize paint, lights and body details. Your car also gets dirty, needs repairs and burns fuel, so you have to look after it.

The action takes place in large open cities such as New York, Miami, Rome and Los Angeles. Traffic includes cars, vans, trucks, motorcycles and bicycles, plus pedestrians. The weather changes too, with rain and wind, and pedestrians open their umbrellas when it starts to rain.
