How to install APK & XAPK files on Android (illustrated)

APK and XAPK files are Android game installers. By default Android blocks apps from outside Google Play, so you allow it once for the app you open the file with. Follow the steps below — the screens are illustrations and may look slightly different on your phone and Android version.

Install an APK step by step (Android 8 and newer)

  1. Download the file from GNVID

Tap the download button on the game page. If the browser warns you, choose "Download anyway".

  2. Open the file when the download completes

Tap "Open" in the download notification, or open it from Files › Downloads.

  3. Security message: tap "Settings"

The first time, Android blocks installs from the browser. This is normal.

  4. Turn on "Allow from this source"

Turn the switch on for the browser you used (Chrome or Samsung Internet), then go back.

  5. Tap "Install"

If Google Play Protect shows a message, choose "Install anyway" (under "More details").

  6. Done! Launch the game

We recommend turning "Allow from this source" off again afterwards.

Install an XAPK file

An XAPK bundles the APK with the game data (OBB). Android cannot open it directly, so you need an XAPK installer app.

  1. Download the XAPK and get an XAPK installer

For example APKPure, XAPK Installer or SAI (Split APKs Installer).

  2. Allow the installer app to install apps

Same "Allow from this source" step, this time for the installer app.

  3. Open the XAPK with it and tap "Install"

It copies the game data to the right folder and installs the game. Keep enough free space (about twice the file size).

  4. Launch the game

Some games download extra data on first launch, so use Wi-Fi.

Where is the setting on my phone?

  • Android 8+ (Pixel and most phones): Settings › Apps › Special app access › Install unknown apps.
  • Samsung (One UI): Settings › Apps › ⋮ › Special access › Install unknown apps.
  • Xiaomi / Redmi / POCO: Settings › Privacy protection › Special permissions › Install unknown apps.
  • Huawei / Honor: Settings › Security › More settings › Install apps from external sources.
  • Android 7 and older: Settings › Security › turn on "Unknown sources".

Common problems

"App not installed"

Usually an older copy signed differently is installed. Uninstall it, then install again, and check free space.

"There was a problem parsing the package"

The download is incomplete or your Android is older than required. Download again and check the required Android version on the game page.

The game asks to download data after installing

Normal for some big games. Connect to Wi-Fi and let the game finish.

Google Play Protect warns me

It appears for any app installed outside the store. Choose "More details" then "Install anyway".
